Hi. I just created an openstreetmap ID, and then tried to associate it with my OpenID (first time use of OpenID) associated with my gmail account. I did confirm the original ID with email, but the OpenID dialog was like a loop -- it wanted me to log in to my regular ID, but my regular ID does the following: On www.openstreetmap.org, click log in

It is a separate system from the wiki editing accounts (unfortunately). See Accounts for an overview of all account types in the OSM ecosystem.
If you want to edit maps, create an OSM account. If you want to edit the wiki, create a wiki account; OpenStreetMap account Main article: OpenStreetMap account. This is the main account used by the project, create an OSM account. It can be used for: OpenStreetMap working data (nodes, ways, relations)
