  3. Progressive metal is metal that expands outside the conventional metal song structure and composition. The majority of metal bands aren't progressive at all (thinking of Sabaton, Lamb of God, and suchlike) because they stick to a simple song structure. This is even more so for the typical chug breakdown -core band.

    • Tool – Lateralus (2000) Not just prog metal – Lateralus is one of the greatest records of any genre full stop. A genuinely faultless near 80-minute-long piece of music that still sounds like it’s been created by some kind of higher power, more than 20 after it was dropped on an unsuspecting world.
