May 7, 1861 - Aug 7, 1941. Rabindranath Tagore FRAS was an Indian polymath – poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali public intellectual, poet, and social activist, developed a visual art practice later in life, with the first exhibition of his paintings held in 1930 in Paris. Like much European art of that period, suffused with the tenets of Surrealism, Tagore’s work was driven by his interest in the subconscious, and the ways memories and emotions could guide image making.
