  1. Apr 26, 2012 · Easy aircraft weathering. Add flight-time wear and tear to your models without using an airbrush. A realistic finish comes with the correct mix of smooth paint, accurate colors, and decals that look like they're part of the paint job. What truly makes a model look real is when it looks used.

    • Washes. As a rule, modelers usually turn to washes as the first step in weathering. Typically applied over a model’s basic paint, a wash is nothing more than paint thinned to a very translucent consistency that flows well into nooks and crannies on your model.
    • Dry-brushing. When dry-brushing, you apply nearly dry paint to a model’s raised details. The brush that you use doesn’t have to be perfect, and, in fact, you’ll probably want to designate a brush or two as your dry-brushes because the technique can be hard on the bristles.
    • Pigments and pastels. You can easily simulate dust and dirt with pigments and pastels. What’s the difference? Weathering pigments you buy premade and come in shades like European mud and desert sand.
    • Chipped paint and scratches. Several techniques for chipping paint exist, but the simplest requires only a fine tipped brush and/or a micro-fiber sponge.

The purpose of a wash is to accent any recessed or raised detail. A dark wash will create the illusion of depth and detail visibility. On large surfaces, a wash can break up an otherwise mono-toned appearance by defining small detail and lines. Most modelers use an oil-based, acrylic or watercolor wash. I always use watercolor for a couple of reaso...

Colored and earth-tone pastels are an excellent way to simulate weathering, fading, exhaust staining, cordite staining, and dust. I picked up a set of colored and earth-toned soft pastels at my local art store. They can be carved with a xacto blade to produce a fine powder for application. I find the best ways to apply them is with a sponge-tipped ...

Another method to enhance the feeling of realism of your model is by dry brushing. It is quite the opposite of applying a wash – with this method you simulate direct sunlight falling onto and highlighting raised parts and thereby enhancing raised details and edges. Drybrushing is done with a fairly broad paintbrush. Load the brush with some paint. ...

Engine and exhaust stains are sometimes very prominent on some aircraft, especially in light colors. These stains should definitely be simulated, if our model is not supposed to be a brand new aircraft just rolling off the production line in the manufacturing plant. Stains can be airbrushed on, or we can use different colored chalk pastels to simul...

Paint failure was common on combat aircraft. Due to harsh conditions, no primer, poor upkeep or foot traffic, many planes displayed paint chipping. There a couple of well-known ways to simulate this effect. You can create an illusion of chipped or nicked off paint around wing edges and access panels by carefully adding spots of aluminum-colored pai...

This is probably the most time-consuming method but the most effective. It may seem intimidating at first. But, after your first time, you’ll have it down. All that’s needed is a bowl of water and regular table salt. 1. Spray your entire model aircraft with a natural metal base coat (I covered this subject in the painting and finishing section). An...

All paint is affected by the sun and the weather. Even the paintwork on your car will show signs of fading after a few years. Military vehicles are even worse because they usually aren’t protected with the same high gloss multi-coat paint than a regular car. Heavy use, constant exposition to harsh weather conditions and the strong ultraviolet rays ...

  4. Weathering a Model Aircraft: Julian Beckett weathering a model aircraft for RCM&E Magazine. Well, the YT International Bf 109 that I reviewed in RCM&E is clocking up the air miles, and it’s all jolly good fun, but the old girl’s simply got no soul.
