Oct 1, 2022 · I was deployed with the Red Cross for Hurricane Matthew. It was a great experience. A huge amount the Red Cross is volunteers. And the more you train the better you are suited for specific tasks. I did damage assessment, where we documented the amount of damage so agencies know the extent. Other people ran shelters, others distributed food.
There are arguments for both sides. As large charities go, the Red Cross is pretty darn good. They put a lot of well-trained people on the ground, with good logistics and resources to make a difference. The arguments against them will include that a significant portion of the Red Cross budget goes into overhead. People are very well compensated.
