Most people with a prostate have trouble urinating as they age, and it’s not usually due to prostate cancer. Still, if you experience a slow or weak urine flow, or if your urine flow starts and stops beyond your ability to control it, it’s a good idea to get your prostate checked.

A tumor on the prostate can put pressure on your bladder and urethra, so take note if you start to feel a frequent and sometimes urgent need to urinate, especially at night.

This condition, known as dysuria, is most commonly associated with urinary tract infections, but it can sometimes be a sign of prostate cancer.

Another possible warning sign of prostate cancer is hematuria, or blood in the urine. Though this can be associated with other health issues, including a urinary tract infection, it’s worth getting checked out.

A rare but early sign of prostate trouble is unexplained pain in the area of your prostate, especially when you’re sitting down. “This could also indicate a prostate infection, but only your urologist can say for certain,” Dr. Weight says.

Both urinary incontinence and fecal incontinencecan come with age or be related to other medical conditions. But if you’re experiencing bladder leakage or an inability to control your bowel movements, speak with your doctor about ruling out prostate cancer.

It’s worth noting, yet again, that all of these issues can be related to other health conditions. But if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, touch base with a urologist to get to the bottom of it. 1. Painful ejaculation. 2. Decreased volume of ejaculation. 3. Inability to keep an erection. 4. Blood in the semen (hematospermia).

As prostate cancer progresses, it may cause pain in your lower back, hips or chest, or numbness in your legs or feet. Most people receive a diagnosis before reaching this point, and of course, pain and numbness can be signs of a variety of other health issues, as well.

    • Bladder and urinary troubles. A prostate tumor that has grown significantly in size may start to press on your bladder and urethra. The urethra is the passage the carries urine from your bladder out of your body.
    • Losing bowel control. It’s not as common, but prostate cancer can also spread to your bowel. The cancer first spreads to the rectum, which is the part of your bowel closest to the prostate gland.
    • Soreness in the groin. When prostate cancer spreads, it’s common for cancer cells to go to your lymph nodes and then move to more areas of your body. (This is the same for other forms of cancer.)
    • Leg swelling or weakness. Advanced cancer begins to crowd out other healthy cells in your body when it grows. Tumors can press on areas like your spinal cord and cause pain, tingling, or swelling in your legs and feet.
  4. Apr 30, 2024 · Prostate cancer is categorized into four stages that indicate severity and spread. Stages 1 and 2 are known as localized or early-stage cancer; stage 3 is called locally advanced cancer, and stage 4, or advanced cancer, is the most severe.
