   • I would go with gcc (MinGW) or clang. If you combine it with MSyS2, you get nearly a linux-like environment. There is no reason to use MSVC, except you have to. It's a bloated compiler (Like some GBs of installation), not supporting newer C than C99 IIRC, and it is nearly unusable from the commandline

It is desirable to have GCC on Windows, because it has better C++11 language support (library is still lacking in view of MSVS2012), fortran, C99 (C11 upcoming) support, etc...
