A house must be 60 blocks, including the exterior of the room. The classic NPC prison build I use only has 30 blocks of interior. 35 block interiors are a good guarantee, though, as that's no less than 63 blocks. Platform floors are also fine as long as there is a certain amount of non-platform floor.

One this size needs to be 12 blocks wide to count as valid housing. Smallest Possible Height. For a home that is wide as opposed to tall, 12x5 works. This gives exactly 30 spaces of room to live inside, because we take the walls and ceiling off and get 10 wide by 3 tall - exactly the height of your character.
