You have to remember in 1964 the idea of a hunting dog living inside was entirely non-existent, now some the best field trial dogs in the country live inside. That isn’t to say don’t read it, it’s an important book for the sport, but I wouldn’t base much of your overall training method on it.
Read up on reward training as-well. A hunting dog will hunt givin the opportunity. Focus on command work for now. The basics sit, stay, down, heal, wait and focus. Work on playing fetch with a long rope to keep them on track. Don’t throw something then chase them around trying to get it back.
