Dec 1, 2021 · A texting etiquette for the early dating stages. How do you really, actually, honestly text in the early stages of dating?! The shortest answer to that is: keeping it genuine. Some start texting before dating, some after; some do it right, some do it wrong; and all that is very understandable.

- Don’t ‘wait X days to reach out’ The first text is always the hardest. How long do you wait to message that cute guy from the gym? If you ask around, some people will tell you to wait for “this many days” before you make contact, but that strategy is flat-out silly.
- Don’t ever just text ‘Hey/Hi/Hello’ This was by far the most common advice you’ll find: don’t just text someone “hey.” In fact, if you browse some online dating profiles you’ll probably find people sharing the same advice.
- Focus your early texts on making plans. After you’ve made contact, focus your early text conversations on making plans. It’s exciting when that cute girl from OkCupid seems way into texting you, but as Christine Hassler, the author of 20-Something, 20-Everything, suggests, too much pre-date texting smothers any spark you might have on your actual first date
- Keep calm and don’t be pushy. Don’t make your early text messages an interview. Not only will you use up all your conversation starters before you actually meet that “guy your friend set you up with,” you’ll probably create unnecessary stress for yourself.

- Texting before a date. It’s best to keep texting to a minimum before you meet in person for the first time. Why? Texting too much before a date creates a false sense of intimacy and it allows you to build up an image of them in your mind that might not be accurate when you’re getting to know each other in real life.
- Texting after a date. This is another instance where people get tripped up a lot in early dating. My rule of thumb is that if you had a good time, just say so via text after the date.
- Get to the second date. So many potential second dates get fumbled here when it comes to texting. Here’s a scenario I hear about all the time and have experienced myself.
- General early dating texting tips. is texting every other day after a first date normal frequency? I don’t like saying what’s normal and what’s not because everyone has different texting preferences and capacities for texting.
- Keep the plan simple. If your date is a little hesitant or nervous about meeting the first time, you don’t want to give them the feeling that the first date will be a regimented affair or that they must follow some extravagant plan.
- Don’t talk too much. The previous example illustrates this rule too. Go for the short and sweet messages. And once you set the logistics, don’t push. The more you text someone before a first date, the more it can feel like you are trying to keep them interested.
- Checking in. Try to avoid texts like, ‘how you doing this morning?’ because that just seems too personal before a first date. Sometimes any questions can seem too date-like before you’ve actually met.
- No sexting. Do not be overtly sexual before you’ve ever met. That means no dick pics, no nudes, and you may even want to stay away from the topic entirely.
