I’m not here to debate on whether or not anything is wrong with the words themselves, just whether or not you should use them when giving a speech to an audience. Fair enough? Before you settle on your next speech, here are some factors to consider:
- Singularity. For the sake of clarity, make sure your central idea expresses one idea only. Only in this way will it be optimally useful to you as you build your outline.
- Consistency. The entire point of framing a thesis with one clear focus is to help you maintain consistency throughout your speech. Beyond the grammatical requirements of subject-verb agreement, you will want to maintain a consistent approach.
- Adequacy. To make sure your audience will understand your speech, you must set aside the assumption that what is obvious to you is also obvious to your audience.
- Uniformity. A preparation outline readily shows whether you are giving “equal time” to each of your three main points. For example, are you providing three pieces of evidence to support each main point?
