It lies on the south side of the mouth of the River Tyne near the site of a Roman fort. The town, founded by the Convent of Durham in the 13th.

- Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum. The most excavated Roman military supply base in the empire, Arbeia was built at the mouth of the Tyne in 160 AD, eventually becoming the supply depot for all 17 forts along Hadrian’s Wall.
