Nahj al-balagha ("The measure of eloquence") is an anthology of orations, epistles, and sayings attributed to Ali b. Abi Talib (d. 40/661), who was the first Shii Imam and the fourth Sunni caliph (r. 35-40/656-61). The work was compiled in 400/1010 by the Twelver-Shii Baghdadi scholar and poet al-Sharif al-Radi (d. 406/1015).
His full name was Umar ibn Al-Khattab ibn Nufayl ibn Abdul- Uzza. He was known as Abu Hafs and earned the nickname of Al Farooq (the Criterion) because he showed his Islam openly in Makkah and through him Allah distinguished between disbelief and faith. was born in 583 AC, thirteen years after the year of the Elephant.
