Aravindan Govindan’s bewitching Thamp̄ (The Circus Tent) isn’t like any of them, though I was fleetingly reminded of Jacques Tati’s largely plotless Jour de fête – which also opens and closes with a big top being assembled then dismantled in a small rural community.

First released in 1978, pioneering parallel cinema master Govindan Aravindan’s poetic and allegorical Malayalam-language drama was previously thought lost, but has now been given a fresh new lease of life courtesy of this stunning new 4K restoration by the Film Heritage Foundation.
The film chronicles the happenings (both inside and outside the tent) of three days when a circus visits a small village in Kerala. The circus comes and leaves, and life goes on. Beautiful, interesting, incredible cinema.
May 14, 2024 · Buncha circus folks rolling into a riverside town, setting up a tent and putting on a few shows before leaving. Just dudes chillin', hangin' around. Random cuts to one fella learning to play the idakka drum, who in due course absconds from town with the circus gang for reasons left as an exercise for the viewer.
