The Dain Curse was originally published in serial format in the Black Mask Magazine in 1928 and 1929 actually in four parts, although the novel form is divided into three parts, the Dains, the Temple, and Quesada.

The nameless detective known only as the Continental Op is tasked with investigating the theft of diamonds from the Leggets, who have ties to the Dain family – a family that is said to be plagued by a terrible curse that leads those near them to gruesome deaths.
The novel was adapted into a CBS television miniseries in 1978, by director E.W. The Dain Curse is in fact Hammett’s lone exploitation novel and it is his only foray into the darker strands of mid- 20 th century pulp. There’s a suggestion of horror running throughout The Dain Curse , and even though this novel ends as a hard-boiled action thriller, it nevertheless highlights the deep connections and affinities between detective and horror fiction.
