The Thief was an award-winning Russian film made in the 1990s, which is also the best-known work of Pavel Chukhray, himself the son of Grigory Chukhray, a prominent Soviet director and screenwriter. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscar and Golden Globe Awards. It is set just after World War II, in the early 1950s.

Description. Set in post-Soviet Russia, "The Thief" is an emotionally charged drama that tells the story of a young boy, Sanya (Mikhail Filipchuk), who is left alone with his father, a former soldier, after his mother abandons them. Sanya's life is thrown into turmoil when his father is sent to jail, leaving him alone on the streets of Moscow.
