To fix it, a cobbler could put in a leather patch and do a zigzag stitch overtop. They could then seal it with something like Aquaseal SR (FKA freesole) and it would be waterproof and bendable. Happened to my Sorels too. Meanwhile my Bean Boots are like twenty years old and rubber is fine.
