Here the Twonky is a little TV set that interferes with his life. It stumbles around the house, manipulated by stagehands you can almost see from time to time. It lights his cigarettes, cleans his dishes, answers his phone with a monotone, robot voice. And it sobers him up instantly with a zap ray, and when anyone else threatens it, it zaps ...
The robot-like set (the Twonky) uses rays to do helpful things (it lights his cigarettes, creates counterfeit $5 notes, empties the dishwasher, shaves him, vacuums the house), but it also walks around awkwardly, uses the phone and makes unwanted value judgements (like breaking his classical records – because the Twonky wants to listen to marching music).
A college professor, left alone by his wife for the weekend, discovers his new TV set is not only alive, but determined to take control of his entire life. Arch Oboler. Director, Writer. C.L. Moore.
