- Killers of the Flower Moon. What connects the top two films of the year is that both are in dialogue with the audience. Killers of the Flower Moon is long, yes, but the rewards are plentiful.
- Oppenheimer. Part of what makes the success of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer so exciting is what is represents. Audiences are ready to dive into new worlds, stories and challenging ethical debates … if you give them a reason.
- Poor Things. To call Poor Things a feminist Frankenstein tale is just scratching the surface of this luridly entertaining look at a woman who is unabashedly in charge of her own destiny, undaunted by society's whims and norms.
- Maestro. All right. There's been some ribbing of director Bradley Cooper on the internets. The video of him explaining his no chair policy to Spike Lee did not go over well.
Welcome to the best new movies of 2023, where you can discover the latest films championed by the critics community! Every movie on the list is Certified Fresh, meaning they held on to a Tomatometer score of at least 75% after a minimum number of critics review — 40 for limited or streaming releases, 80 for wide theatrical releases, with five of those reviews coming from Top Critics.
2 days ago · Best Movies 2023 After an explosive run in theaters, including generating over $900 million worldwide and a revitalizing IMAX engagement, Universal’s creative gamble pays off as critics crown director Christopher Nolan and star Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer .
- The Creator. Tom Parsons, TV and AV Editor. The Creator is an astonishing achievement that doesn’t simply outperform its tiny (by the standards of modern sci-fi blockbusters) $80-million budget but actually delivers more convincing special effects than most films that cost vastly more to make.
- Napoleon. Becky Roberts, Managing Editor. Charging soldiers on horseback, firing cannons and a battleground on a thin layer of ice – the Battle of Austerlitz is just one (albeit the best) example of Ridley Scott playing to his directorial strengths in this spectacle-filled Bonaparte biopic.
- The Nun II. Alastair Stevenson, Editor-in-Chief. The Nun II is the latest movie set in the “Conjuring-verse”. But unlike the full-fat Conjuring films, which tell a heavily fictionalised version of the exploits of infamous “real world paranormal investigators” Ed and Lorraine Warren, it follows a Nun’s battle against an evil demon.
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Kashfia Kabir, Hi-Fi and Audio Editor. There hasn’t been anything more visually inventive and breathtakingly creative put on screen than Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
- Tom Gliatto
- 'Oppenheimer' Director Christopher Nolan’s three-hour masterpiece is about how a life-annihilating force — the atomic bomb — was unleashed on a world already (always) buffeted by other, older forces, the ones that have made and broken societies: political, ideological, psychological.
- 'Killers of the Flower Moon' Martin Scorsese directed the most sinister western ever to come out of Hollywood: an epic account, well over 3 hours long, about the systematic murder of members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma — it was a scheme by White men to gain control of the oil rights that had made the Osage colossally wealthy.
- 'The Color Purple' This latest adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel about long-suffering Celie (Fantasia Barrino) is the best, with a much surer tone than Steven Spielberg’s 1995 film and a cast of confident, ingratiating talents, including Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks and Halle Bailey.
- 'Maestro' The tempo is furioso in director-star Bradley Cooper’s wildly stylish but endearing film about the chaotic union of composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein and wife Felicia (Carey Mulligan).
