Tales of the Gold Monkey was an American adventure drama television series [1] [2] [3] broadcast in prime time on Wednesday nights by ABC from September 22, 1982, until June 1, 1983. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] Debuting the year following the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark , [ 3 ] the series featured early aviation, indigenous locals, and cliff-hanging action.

Don Bellisario ( Magnum, P.I ., Quantum Leap , JAG , NCIS ) originally shopped the series around to the networks in 1979, but none of them wanted to take a chance on a period drama (set in 1938).

Jun 19, 2006 · Tom Greene: First of all, remember that Gold Monkey was the 100% brilliant brainchild of Don Bellisario. The two-hour pilot, which I thought was amazing, and better than most features of the day (and had up to then, and maybe still, the most amazing set ever created for a TV show) had the look and feel of a more sophisticated action-adventure show.
