The Jerk, LA Story, and Bowfinger are all as good as they are because he gave them such a great foundation with their screenplays. If you like his work but haven't read his books I'd highly recommend them.

We just watched Bowfinger (1999) last night and it was fantastic. Steve Martin as Bobby Bowfinger, a washed up movie director who never got his big break. Eddie Murphy as Kit Ramsey, a black action movie mega-star with paranoid delusions. Eddie Murphy also as a brace-faced nerdy loser that happens to look remarkably like Kit Ramsey.
