Gandalf is a protagonist in J. R. R. Tolkien 's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He is a wizard, one of the Istari order, and the leader of the Company of the Ring. Tolkien took the name "Gandalf" from the Old Norse "Catalogue of Dwarves" (Dvergatal) in the Völuspá.
Gandalf endured many difficult trials and adventures during his time in Middle-earth. Strangely, he never took a permanent residence, thus earning nicknames such as “Grey Wanderer.” He was an important member of the White Council; making strategic decisions alongside Elrond Half-elven, Galadriel, and Saruman.

Gandalf, also known as Gandalf the Grey, later Gandalf the white, is one of the main protagonists in both The Hobbit film trilogy and Lord of the Rings. Gandalf was portrayed by Ian McKellen in all six Middle-earth films.

- Arrival in Middle-earth. During the Third Age, while Sauron's 'dark spirit of malice' was increasing over Middle-earth, the Valar chose the Istari, missionaries from among the Maiar, to go to Middle-earth and help the peoples.
- Early vigilance. Around T.A. 1100, the Istari and the Eldar discovered that some evil entity resided at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. Dark shapes moved in the forest and evil began to multiply in the woods.
