John Bell. (1797–1869). American statesman John Bell was a nominee for president of the United States in 1860, on the eve of the American Civil War. He ran on the Constitutional Union Party ticket; the party had been formed the year before to rally support for the Union and the Constitution without regard to sectional issues.
