To anticipate much of what follows, in spite of the limitations of the data and regardless of some opinions to the contrary, I believe it is possible to formulate a good picture of warfare in the past based on archaeology, ethnology and early historical accounts of many societies.
There has been enormous variety of warfare in Greece and beyond. The methods of warfare have undergone a number of significant developments. The evolutions in the tools of war have a variety of military, institutional and ideological ramifications. Many members of Greek communities might relish the opportunity for war.

New developments in these two spheres tended to begin at the eastern and western fringes of the Greek world, as a result of contact with foreign peoples, and then to make their way dramatically to centre stage on the Greek mainland.
