Students identify and draw shapes in Matisse’s collage, “Anfitrite,” 1947. Then draw their own shapes inspired by the ocean.
Objects can resemble shapes in an artwork; for example, an apple can look like a circle. There are two types of shapes: Geometric shapes are mathematical shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, cubes, spheres, and cones. Organic shapes are shapes from nature like leaves or flowers.
Students will be introduced to one of the basic elements of art—shape—by analyzing the types of shapes used in various works of art to differentiate between geometric and natural shapes. They will then create their own cut paper collage based on a theme they select.
These worksheets are just what you need to introduce the Art Element, SHAPE, to students. Included in the download are a variety of worksheets which allow students to explore and create with enabling sheets to provide support according to student need.
