Aug 18, 2023 · This shouldn't be confused with social identity which is the set of social groups to which you belong. In many cases, social identity is a small part of an individual's identity whereby people are unique and not defined by their group memberships such as society, culture and ethnicity. The following are common elements of personal identity.
- Individualism. The belief that you are an independent person who is defined by your own qualities as opposed to your memberships in groups. Individualists tend to identify with other individualists and aspects of society and culture that are individualistic.
- Family. Your immediate and extended family.
- Friends. Identifying with your friends and social circles.
- Language. Language is the foundation of thinking and is an extremely pervasive element of identity. This may not be obvious when you are surrounded by your native language but becomes apparent when you're immersed in a foreign language.
- Gender. Your gender is your culturally assigned or self-identified association with characteristics including man (masculine), woman (feminine), and transgender.
- Sex. Your sex is a biological classification related to your reproductive organs. In western society, we see these as the male and female sexes. Your sex is closely associated with your ability to reproduce.
- Race. Race refers to your biological association with groups of humans with shared characteristics such as skin pigmentation and facial features. Common racial groups include Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, Black-Africans, and Pacific Islanders.
- Ethnicity. Ethnicity refers to the traditions of your ancestors. Examples of ethnicities include African-American, Latino, Cajun (French-Americans), and Kurdish (Middle-East).
