Jul 15, 2024 · As interest in the psychology of leadership has increased over the last 100 years, a number of different leadership theories have been introduced to explain exactly how and why certain people become great leaders.
In this section, we reviewed several influential leadership theories. Theory X and Theory Y leaders hold different fundamental assumptions about the nature of employees and their motivations at work. Trait approaches identify the characteristics required to be perceived as a leader and to be successful in the role.
To do so, I introduce a framework composed of two features: whether theories (a) involve the study of leaders or leading (i.e., the person versus the process) and (b) conceptualize leadership as a cause or a consequence (i.e., an independent versus dependent variable).

We begin by examining authentic leadership and its development, followed by work that takes a cognitive science approach. We then examine new-genre leadership theories, complexity leadership, and leadership that is shared, collective, or distributed.
In the following section, we describe early leadership research; then we turn to the three major waves of conceptual and method-ological contributions summarized in Figure 1, highlighting the interdependence of theory, methodology, and context in sustaining research interest in leadership.
