Some people might find think that's a questionable message to find in a book for children, and considering it's the same argument people used back in the day to defend actual slavery, they're not wrong, but it's important to keep in mind that house elves are a crucial part of the wish fulfillment aesthetic that permeates the Harry Potter books. You're not supposed to consider morals, you're ...

The wizarding world evolved right alongside the Muggle world, but with the existence of magic in one and the need for more advanced technology in the other, the two worlds slowly started to resemble each other less and less. For this reason, in the '90s, while Harry was attending school, witches and wizards were still using a quill and ink to write...
Despite the series being largely about love, some of the best couples in Harry Pottercome across as stiff and awkward. Between Ron and Hermione, Tonks and Lupin, and especially Harry and Ginny, there just wasn't much believable affection. While this awkwardness is considerably worse in the movies, the books also put little energy into the love stor...
Near the end of Harry's time at Hogwarts, he and his friends started to explore different occupation options to pursue after graduation. However, these options were pretty much restricted to a job at the Ministry of Magic, teaching, or working in a shop. Unfortunately, this didn't leave the graduating students with many options. In addition, there ...
One of the biggest reveals of the Harry Potterseries is that Harry had been raised a hero just to ensure that he would willingly sacrifice himself to Voldemort in the end. While Dumbledore suspected that Harry would survive the process, he was never sure, which made his treatment of and relationship with Harry feel slightly problematic. Even Snape,...
There are several times in Harry Potter when an Unbreakable Vow would have been useful. Of course, the stakes might have been too high for use by good witches and wizards, but several dark wizards could have saved themselves a headache if they had just one. As the cleverest witch of her age, Hermione was a great best friend for Harry Potter to have. However, she also proved that she could be considerably more intelligent than the adults at Hogwarts. For example, in Chamber of Secrets, Hermione was the only one, including the teachers, to realize that Slytherin's monster was a Basilisk. This is less of...
There's nothing wrong with a little harmless rivalry, but the constant battle between the Gryffindors and Slytherins at Hogwarts could be downright toxic. The bad blood goes all the way back to the Hogwarts founders themselves, and the contradictory views of bravery versus ambition were still going strong thousands of years later. Fans typically ag...
Veritaserum and Pensieves are more examples of practical magic that are hardly utilized in the wizarding world. Veritaserum, or a truth potion, is used to force the drinker to tell nothing but the truth and reveal secrets that they would have otherwise had no intention of spilling. A Pensieve is a basin that can be used to observe memories to bette...
Throughout the Harry Potterseries, a lot of significance was put on Neville's history with Bellatrix Lestrange. When he was still an infant, Bellatrix tortured his parents to a state referred to as worse than death, leaving Neville to be raised by his grandmother. Several times, Neville expressed a desire to get revenge on the dark witch, but this ...
The Marauders were first introduced in Prisoner of Azkaban. The group quickly became likable, with James Potter leading a band of Fred and George-like characters breaking rules and spreading laughs. As the series went on, however, Harry learned that his father's crew could be very problematic. Many of the laughs they had were at the expense of othe...

Opinions on the house system and alternatives. For a long time, I've been of the belief that the house system in Harry Potter is a really bad idea. Imagine you're going into sixth grade. Before you can start classes, your teacher tells you you have to be in a category that are essentially boiled down to good, evil, friendly, and smart.

Dec 3, 2020 · This week, for my final post of this semester, I will be discussing the psychology behind the Hogwarts House sorting. I am going to assume that everyone who I reading this blog knows about the Hogwarts houses so I will only be doing a brief explanation of them at the beginning of their sections.
