What are related services in special education? Related services are supportive services designed to help students with disabilities benefit from their education. Examples include speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and counseling. Why are related services important in special education?
Every year, millions of children in this country with disabilities or other difficulties receive special services at school, designed with their unique needs in mind. These services are part of the special education system.
Among students receiving special education and/or related services, the most common category of disability was specific learning disabilities (32 percent). Enacted in 1975, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates the provision of a free and appropriate public school education for eligible students ages 3–21.
Special education-related services include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Certified orientation and mobility specialists, teachers of the visually impaired, board-certified behavior analysts, and music therapists may service eligible students.
