Dec 20, 2023 · The Big Five Personality Traits, also known as OCEAN or CANOE, are a psychological model that describes five broad dimensions of personality: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism.
The five-factor model’s five traits—extraversion, neuroticism, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness—combine to form a personality type. Affirmative, vivacious, and gregarious behaviors are signs of extraversion, also known as surgency.
Costa and McCrae followed in the footsteps of Eysenck, but they expanded slightly upon the number of second order factors. The result of their efforts became one the most widely respected perspectives on personality structure today: the Five-Factor Model of personality.
There is little doubt that the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality traits (the “Big Five”) is currently the dominant paradigm in personality research and one of the most influential models in all of psychology.
