  1. This list showcases the Primetime Emmy Award winners in the comedy program, drama program, variety program, and lead actors categories. In the early days of the Primetime Emmy Awards, categories awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences changed year-to-year, causing irregularities in the continuity of the listed awards.

  2. The Flintstones and Family Guy are the only animated sitcoms to be nominated for the award. [1] As of 2020, Fleabag (United Kingdom) [2] and Schitt's Creek (Canada) are the only shows from outside the United States to win this award. [3] The Big Three networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) have dominated the category.

    • Veep | 68 nominations. Inspired by the British series The Thick of It, Veep followed the hilarious life of fictional Vice President Selina Meyer. Throughout the show's run, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for all seven seasons, winning the category six times in a row from 2012 to 2017.
    • Seinfeld | 68 nominations. Often billed as "a show about nothing" that simply finds the humor in everyday life, Seinfeld was a ratings hit that continued to grow in popularity as the seasons went on.
    • 24 | 68 nominations. There were a few years during the aughts when 24 was one of the biggest shows on television. In the era before streaming services, America would come together to watch counterterrorist agent Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland) save the day.
    • Everybody Loves Raymond | 69 nominations. Everybody Loves Raymond centered around a working-class family on Long Island, with Ray Romano starring as the family's patriarch.

    • "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (1975-77) Mary Tyler Moore could turn Emmy voters on with a smile. "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" won Best Comedy Series three times and won 29 Emmys overall.
    • "All In The Family" (1971-73, 1978) Thank goodness Archie Bunker didn't have a Twitter account, or the groundbreaking Norman Lear sitcom would never have lasted, much less spun off three other successful shows: "The Jeffersons," "Maude" and "Archie Bunker's Place."
