- Cosmic Detective (Kickstarter) Matt Kindt (writer), Jeff Lemire (writer), David Rubin (artist) In the darkest months of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the comic industry had ground to a halt and the future looked uncertain, many creators turned to Kickstarter to crowdsource new passion projects.
- Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands (Drawn & Quarterly) Kate Beaton (writer/artist) Comic books can reach a scale as grand and fantastic as a planet-sized clash of titans, or as intimate and focused as a single person's life.
- Judgment Day (Marvel) Kieron Gillen (writer), Valerio Schiti (artist) It's not every year that a summer superhero crossover event stands out as a truly great comic, but Judgment Day was special.
- Monkey Meat (Image) Juni Ba (writer/artist) The title may not sound super appetizing, but Monkey Meat is an endlessly entertaining anthology comic that eviscerates capitalism, pop culture, and even selfish hero fantasies.

- Chronophage. This graphic novel from Tim Seeley and Ilias Kryiazis sticks with you, especially if you’re a parent. Seeley can operate in distinctly comedic (Money Shot) or somber modes (Revival), and Chronophage slides comfortably into the latter, following a badly fraying mother-daughter relationship as a too-good-to-be-true new boyfriend enters the scene for mom.
- We Only Kill Each Other. One of my newest rules over the last two years is that if I see Stephanie Phillips writing historical fiction, I jump on that series (a lesson first learned reading The Butcher of Paris).

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest (or, as we like to call it around here, “Dan Mora Takes You on the Coolest Tour of the DC Universe You Could Ever Hope For”) is practically a manifestation of what most people think of when they think of DC Comics. Conveniently set an indeterminate amount of years in the recent past, where Dick Grayson is still the o...
Earlier this year, we asked “How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?” Now that his first big crossover (with art partners Valerio Schitti and Marte Gracia) is in the books, we now want to grab Marvel Unlimited with both hands and shake it while yelling “WHAT TOOK SO F^^#% LONG?” AXE: Judgment Day is the culminati...
Daredevil’s never really been an “event” kind of guy. Sure, he’ll get sucked into big events like the Infinity War or Inferno, where he’ll battle his doppelganger or a demon-possessed vacuum cleaner. Usually, even when he’s the center of an event like Shadowlands, the whole thing stays contained to Hell’s Kitchen. But with Devil’s Reign, writer Chi...

- 20th Century Men. Writer: Deniz Camp. Artist: S. Morian. Letterer: Aditya Bidikar. Image Comics. Brutal and incisive, 20th Century Men is a work of counterfactual history that’s enormous in scope but human in its concern.
- A La Brava – A Latina Superhero Team. Writer: Kayden Phoenix. Penciller: Renata Garcia. Inker: Ari Navarette. Colorist: Aislin Gry. Letterer: Sandra Romero. Phoenix Studios, LLC.
- Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Writer: Mark Waid. Artists: Dan Mora & Travis Moore. Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain. Letterer: Aditya Bidikar. DC Comics. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest, Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and Tamra Bonvillain’s new edition of the classic team-up comic, is a breath of fresh air for a longtime reader who, as much as I love reading every book and seeing how it all fits together, also just wants some standalone superheroics every now and then.
