  1. And since Atari’s return to console manufacturing with the Atari VCS has reignited the passion of many retro game enthusiasts, I think it’s the perfect opportunity to review the Atari 7800’s library. Let’s dive in and reminisce about some of the best games on Atari’s third major console.

    • Xevious (1987) Xevious is the best Atari 7800 game of all time! As well as being one of those games that’s hard to pronounce, is another influential title in the shoot-em-up genre.
    • Centipede (1986) Up next is Centipede, another fixed shooter that made waves during the golden age of arcade gaming. Centipede features on so many different consoles that it’s hard to keep count, and it remains a firm favourite throughout the Atari home console family.
    • Pole Position II (1987) It’s amazing how much clearer Pole Position II is compared to the original Pole Position game on the 2600 and 5200. The tracks are defined, the mountains look real, and the cars actually look like cars!
    • One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird (1987) It’s hard to ever imagine EA as being in financial difficulty, but it happened, and One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird helped to get them out of it.
    • Double Dragon. While the NES port has ascended into the stuff of legend, and the computer ports are controversial and inconsistent in quality, the Atari 7800 port hits hard and does an amazing job keeping pace.
    • Alien Brigade. A Light Gun game that allows regular controller use, and a fun one at that, Alien Brigade tasks the player with rescuing POWs and evacuating soldiers while shooting infectious aliens that attempt to reanimate the dead and slaughter the living.
    • BasketBrawl. Playing clean is the norm, and norms are made to be challenged. BasketBrawl encourages players to play ball dirty, kicking and punching the opposition out of the way to score points, making the act of hoop scoring the reward for pushing through the rumble pit of the court.
    • Ikari Warriors. Arcade-style vertical run n' gun shooters have been mostly supplanted in history by the horizontal shooter, with games like Commando and Mega Man leading the charge.
    • Double Dragon. Double Dragon is basically "80s action movie the video game." It's the perfect blast from the past and I love it for that. Some might find this fact interesting, but Double Dragon was one of the first games Activision made.
    • Midnight Mutants. Midnight Mutants proves that every day can be Halloween, so long as you can outrun the mental asylum. Just kidding. But still, Midnight Mutants was definitely one of the best Atari 7800 games of its time.
    • Ikari Warriors. Here's an interesting bit of video game history for ya. Ikari Warriors started its life as a Commando copy. Funnily enough, it actually ended up being better than its predecessor, and one of the best military games of the 80s.
    • Food Fight. As a child, there wasn't a trope that was more chaotic than the food fight. It was a total disintegration of any sort of rules and regulations.
