There are plenty of options for accommodation in San Francisco. We’ve stayed at and are happy to recommend the Hotel Rex, which is well located in the city center and within walking distance of many of the locations in this photography guide. You can see more options for hotels in San Franciscohere, there’s a wide choice across a range of budgets!

I don’t feel that one post can cover the whole city, nor do I feel myself to be anywhere near an expert in all the photographic locations in San Francisco. I’ve not even mentioned the Bay Bridge, the Painted Ladies, Haight-Ashbury, the various museums… the list goes on! Thankfully, this isn’t the only website in the world, and there are a good numb...

    • Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge defines our city and it’s every visitor’s favorite place to take pictures in SF. You can shoot the bridge every which way, so if you are interested in making a project of it, I recommend that you check out my guide to shooting and viewing the Golden Gate Bridge.
    • Sutro Baths. The Sutro Baths are what remains of a grand Victorian experiment to build expansive public baths for the masses. It’s a great shooting location for people who like both urbex and great landscape views.
    • Lands End & The Labyrinth. Follow the Sutro Baths northeast around the outer edge of San Francisco until you come to the labyrinth. This cool little puzzle is not only a nod to San Francisco’s counter culture, but the rock from which to shoot it also provides great photography views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands.
    • Torpedo Wharf at Dawn. Getting up at dawn is hard but seeing the sunrise over San Francisco is so worth it. Torpedo Wharf juts out into the bay from Chrissy Field.
    • Coit Tower and Pioneer Park. Best time to photograph: Sunset. The observation deck of Coit Tower, perched atop Telegraph Hill, is the perfect spot to capture some scenic views over the city.
    • Pier 7. Best time to photograph: At sunrise as the morning light strikes the financial district. With its wooden boardwalk, romantic lanterns and incredible symmetry Pier 7 should be high on your list of San Francisco photo locations.
    • Museum of Ice Cream. Best time to photograph: We recommend the first tour of the day when crowds are lower. If you want to bring an element of fun and color pop to your San Francisco photography then check out fantastic Museum of Ice Cream.
    • Pier 39 & Alcatraz. Most visitors to San Francisco make a stop at Pier 39 with its carnival-like attractions, souvenir shopping and aquarium. The best thing about Pier 39 is the huge population of sea lions who have made their home on the docks to the west of the pier.
    • UC Berkeley Botanical Garden, Berkeley (above) This is one of my favorite botanical gardens in the area! My favorite spots are the greenhouses, the cactus garden, and the redwood grove.
    • James Turrell Skyspace, de Young Museum, San Francisco. Everyone loves the de Young for its sharp angles, the cool steam garden nearby, and, of course, the art!
    • Del Valle Regional Park, Livermore. This is a beautiful, versatile park with rolling hills, oak trees, and, of course, a reservoir. From the Arroyo Road Staging Area, take the East Shore Trail to the top of the hill, where you'll overlook the reservoir and perhaps interact with some cows grazing nearby.
    • Dublin Hills Regional Park, Dublin (See the lupines here, plus more shots here) I probably never would have found this place if I didn't live in Dublin at one point, but it's a great spot if you're looking for rolling green (or gold, in the summer) hills with great views.
