- Adora and the Distance (ComiXology Originals) Part fantasy epic, part deeply personal meditation on a daughter's unique view of the world, Marc Bernardin and Ariela Kristantina's graphic novel is a spellbinding masterwork of emotional storytelling, blending the real and unreal with a sense of warmth and wonder that will sweep you off your feet.
- Barbalien: Red Planet (Dark Horse) The world of Black Hammer continues to expand, and with this miniseries from creator Jeff Lemire, writer Tate Brombal, and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta, it expanded in an intimate, strikingly visceral way.
- Beta Ray Bill (Marvel) That Beta Ray Bill got his own comic was entertaining enough on its own. That it turned out this good was almost a bonus. Daniel Warren Johnson's wild ride into the heart of his title character's search for a new destiny was one of the most visually invigorating, fist pump worthy comics on the stands this year, with a sense of constant inventiveness that made it worthy of the character's creator, the great Walt Simonson.
- The Blue Flame (Vault) After giving us some of Marvel's best books in recent years, Christopher Cantwell set out to build his own superhero universe this year with artist Adam Gorham, and they didn't disappoint.
- The Joker. To say James Tynion IV is having a moment is an understatement. When Tynion was announced as the next Batman writer after Tom King’s not-quite-100 issue run, it felt a bit like a tentative stopgap with one of DC’s most reliable regulars and disciple of DC mainstay Scott Snyder.
- The Nice House on the Lake. Speaking of Tynion, I can’t remember the last time a first issue had an approval rating as high as the first issue of the eight issue Black Label series, The Nice House on the Lake.
- Catwoman: Lonely City. My favorite DC Black Label launch of 2021 is Cliff Chiang’s vision of a future for Selina Kyle and Gotham City, inevitably seen as a response to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns but with a flavor all its own.
- Arkham City: The Order of the World. I have a confession: I don’t get Dan Watters and Dani’s Coffin Bound. I respect it, and I appreciate it, but I definitely do not get it.
Jun 2, 2021 · Best DC Comics Trade Collections for 2021. Batman: Creature of the Night. Written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by the late John Paul Leon, this is a metafictional gothic take on Batman, akin to the classic, Superman: Secret Identity, just with Gotham City sensibilities.
