Immersive Railroading is a Minecraft mod for 1.16.5, 1.15.2, 1.14.4, 1.12, 1.11, 1.10, and 1.7.10. It adds a new transport system (item and players) to the game. It is based on real world physics (where possible) and uses life size models to convey the true scale and grandeur of Railroading.
Railcraft is a popular one. I think those three are the only good train mods for 1.12.2. Your best bet is probably Immersive Railroading, since you can just change the mod's models using texture packs. But you are gonna have to bear with the complexity.

The highest tech mod for trains which is available for 1.12.2. Steves carts 2 for function, immersive railroading for looks and some decent function, but nowhere near the utility of steves carts 2. Definitely imerssive railroading although you also might wanna check out its reasource packs first.
