- The heart wall is composed of connective tissue, endothelium, and cardiac muscle. It is the cardiac muscle that enables the heart to contract and allows for the synchronization of the heartbeat. The three heart wall is divided into three layers: epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium.

The myocardium is the muscular wall of the heart, or the heart muscle. It contracts to pump blood out of the heart and then relaxes as the heart refills with returning blood. The endocardium is the innermost layer of tissue that lines the chambers of the heart.
The serous pericardium is composed of two continuous layers that surround the heart. The visceral layer, also known as the epicardium, directly adheres to and lines the heart’s itself, making it the innermost layer of the pericardium and the outermost layer of the heart wall.
- Location of the Heart. The human heart is located within the thoracic cavity, medially between the lungs in the space known as the mediastinum. Figure 19.2 shows the position of the heart within the thoracic cavity.
- Shape and Size of the Heart. The shape of the heart is similar to a pinecone, rather broad at the superior surface and tapering to the apex (see Figure 19.2).
- Chambers and Circulation through the Heart. The human heart consists of four chambers: The left side and the right side each have one atrium and one ventricle.
- Membranes, Surface Features, and Layers. Our exploration of more in-depth heart structures begins by examining the membrane that surrounds the heart, the prominent surface features of the heart, and the layers that form the wall of the heart.
Jul 26, 2024 · The three heart wall is divided into three layers: epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium. Epicardium: the outer protective layer of the heart. Myocardium: muscular middle layer wall of the heart. Endocardium: the inner layer of the heart.
Nov 3, 2023 · The epicardium is the outermost layer of the heart. It is actually the visceral layer of the serous pericardium, which adheres to the myocardium of the heart. Histologically, it is made of mesothelial cells, the same as the parietal pericardium.
