  2. One of the best State Parks. A little more than an hour north of Houston, Texas, Galveston Island State Park is a gem of a park. This 2000+ acre park opened in 1975 and has 2 sides- Bay side and Beach side. The Bay side has the lagoons and marshes, 20 RV sites, 10 tent sites, observation deck, 2 rent houses, and is great for fishing or kayaking.

    • Beach Camping. RV lovers and camping fans will flock to the park to enjoy an overnight stay at one of 95 campsites. Galveston Island State Park is the ONLY place you can camp ON the beach in Galveston.
    • Fishing. Fish for flounder, sand trout, redfish, croaker, black drum, and other species in the bay area or beachside. No fishing license is required for state parks, so anyone can come fish.
    • Birding. Galveston Island State Park's ecosystems provide a range of habitats and attract numerous bird species to observe, so novice and experienced birders won't want to miss this park.
    • Hiking & Biking. The Park has four miles of trails for hiking and biking, with varying difficulties and distances. Make a rest stop at the observation towers or photo blinds along the way to take in the beautiful wildlife and scenery.

  7. The bay side of Galveston Island State Park also has two camping areas as well as a nature center, nature observation areas, fishing and crabbing areas, and hiking and kayaking trails. We have had two wonderful camping experiences at Galveston Island State Park. The Park is also a great place to watch birds and take pictures of them and the surf.
