Huxley was born in Godalming, Surrey, England, on 26 July 1894. [ 14 ][ 15 ] He was the third son of the writer and schoolmaster Leonard Huxley, who edited The Cornhill Magazine, [ 16 ] and his first wife, Julia Arnold, who founded Prior's Field School. Julia was the niece of poet and critic Matthew Arnold and the sister of Mrs. Humphry Ward.

A few years later, though, the counterculture of the 1960s was to embrace much of his thinking on drugs as a gateway to a pseudo-mysticism.
