Again, in Matthew 16:24, Jesus says, "takes up his cross and follows Me," and further explains it to mean "loses his life for My sake." In both passages Jesus is making it clear to aspiring disciples that discipleship is very costly - so severe, that it is best illustrated as crucifixion.
