  1. Nov 9, 2017 · Venus: Exploration. Dozens of spacecraft have launched to explore Venus, but not all have been successful. NASA's Mariner 2 was the first spacecraft to visit any planet beyond Earth when it flew past Venus on Dec. 14, 1962. NASA is planning two new missions to Venus: VERITAS, and DAVINCI. All NASA Science Missions.

  2. Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and the sixth largest planet. It’s the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus is a cloud-swaddled planet named for a love goddess, and often called Earth’s twin. But pull up a bit closer, and Venus turns hellish. Our nearest planetary neighbor, the second planet from the Sun, has a surface hot ...

VERITAS, and another mission called DAVINCI, will be the first NASA spacecraft to explore Venus since the 1990s. Veritas will discover the secrets of a lost habitable world, gathering data to reveal how the paths of Venus and Earth diverged. DAVINCI will study Venus in unprecedented detail from near the top of the clouds to the planet’s surface.

    • Did Venus ever host life? Big questions are often asked when thinking about other planets: Is there life? WAS there ever life? If so, what sort of life?
    • How did Venus and Earth come to be so different? Venus and Earth are similar in size and density, so hypothetically, these planets could be very similar.
    • How did Venus form? Even this seemingly basic question about the origin of Venus is still a mystery. “It’s amazing to me that we don’t know whether Venus formed from the same early solar system materials as did Earth and Mars,” says Getty.
    • What is the atmospheric composition at Venus? The atmospheric composition of Venus is an important piece of the context we are seeking as we aim to better evaluate Venus’ potential habitability over time.
  4. Dec 11, 2019 · Now superheated by greenhouse gases, Venus’ climate was once more similar to Earth’s, with a shallow ocean’s worth of water. It may even have subduction zones like Earth, areas where the planet’s crust sinks back into rock closer to the core of the planet. “Venus is like the control case for Earth,” said Smrekar.

  5. Sep 19, 2023 · VERITAS and NASA’s Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI) mission were selected in 2021 under NASA’s Discovery Program as the agency’s next missions to Venus. VERITAS partners include Lockheed Martin Space, the Italian Space Agency, the DLR, and Centre National d’Études Spatiales in France.

  6. Jul 8, 2020 · Proposed for a 2026 launch, VERITAS would orbit the planet and peer through the obscuring clouds with a powerful state-of-the art radar system to create 3D global maps and a near-infrared spectrometer to figure out what the surface is made of. It would also measure the planet’s gravitational field to determine the structure of Venus’ interior.
