      • Wanting to prove his courage to Jesus, he made an amazing statement: “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water” (Matthew 14:28). These were rough seas, and Peter was willing to literally step onto them because He was looking at Jesus. That gave him confidence and courage. It went well for a while until Peter started to sink.

  2. Aug 27, 2024 · Only Peter walks on water. Matthew 14:29 simply states that Peter walks on water toward Jesus. Simple words for an incredible moment. But… Matthew 14:30 interrupts this incredible moment with a conjunction. As Peter walks on water he starts to notice how powerful the wind and waves are, and he takes his eyes off Jesus.

  3. Jan 4, 2022 · Peter walks on water toward Jesus. His baby steps of faith last only a moment, though, and then he takes his eyes off of the Lord. With his physical sight, Peter sees the wind and waves surrounding him, and “he was afraid” (verse 30) and begins to sink.

    • Like Peter, we should first ask God what His will is before we act. You’ll notice that Peter didn’t recklessly jump out of the boat onto the water, without warning nor thought.
    • Obey God when He calls, even when things seem impossible. I believe that when Peter walks on water, it is a symbolism of each person’s special journey with God.
    • With every step you take, don’t lose sight of Jesus. Peter was only able to walk on water when he kept his eyes fixed on Jesus (Matthew 14:29).
    • Don’t let fear distract you from God. More specifically, Peter only started to sink when he turned away from Jesus to look at the roaring wind (Matthew 14:30).
    • Look for Jesus and keep looking to Jesus. Although a storm surrounded Him, Peter looked to Jesus. The only problem was that he stopped looking at Jesus.
    • When Jesus commands you, obey Him. Jesus told Peter to “come” to Him on the water. Even though it made no sense, Peter did what Jesus said. This is what obedience looks like–doing what Jesus says.
    • Faith is simply taking the next step. Peter took one step to get out of the boat and onto the water. Peter was doing just fine when he was focused on the next step, and got into trouble when he lost sight of his next step.
    • Faith unleashes the supernatural. Peter did not experience the supernatural power of God that allowed him to walk on water until he trusted as evidenced by his actions.
