Sea lions live both on land and in the sea. They rest and mate on rocky shores or sandy beaches, and they hunt and cool off in the ocean during warm weather. Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short and thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they make up the family Otariidae, eared seals. The sea lions have six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera.
Sea Lions are found in all sorts of waters except the Northern Atlantic Ocean. Some species live in sub arctic regions while others prefer warmer climates such as the Californian Sea Lion.
