The first question reads, Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? A negative answer is implied here. A lion does not roar unless he has his prey in sight and is ready to jump on it.
Jan 24, 2017 · First, the implied answer of Amos’ questions is “no” rather than “yes.”. Second, the subject matter of the rhetorical questions ends up being related to Amos’ larger message in this passage. He isn’t simply asking random questions with an obvious “no” answer.
For this is what the LORD has said to me: “Like a lion roaring or a young lion over its prey—and though a band of shepherds is called out against it, it is not terrified by their shouting or subdued by their clamor—so the LORD of Hosts will come down to do battle on Mount Zion and its heights.
When a lion roars (verse 4), he is warning others of his presence—there is still time to escape. When a young lion cries out of his den, however, he is content because he has killed and eaten. It is too late to escape.
If a lion roars, the reason is it has caught its prey. If a bird-trap shuts, the reason is a bird has been caught in it. If troops assemble for battle, the reason is the city fears an attack (3-6). Likewise if a prophet speaks boldly, the reason is God has given him a warning to pass on to the people.
