The anode is shaped like a saucer. When visualizing how the anode sits in the x-ray tube, think of a saucer standing on end with its bottom facing the filament wires (Figure 1-5). The edge of the anode that tilts back is where the x-rays are produced.
X-ray artifacts can present in a variety of ways including abnormal shadows noted on a radiograph or degraded image quality, and have been produced by artificial means from hardware failure, operator error and software (post-processing) artifacts.
X-rays are produced within the X-ray machine, also known as an X-ray tube. No external radioactive material is involved. Radiographers can change the current and voltage settings on the X-ray machine in order to manipulate the properties of the X-ray beam produced.
At the end of this chapter you should be able to: Differentiate between Source-Image Distance, Object-Image Distance and Source-Object Distance. Calculate SID, OID or SOD when given the two other factors. Differentiate between primary radiation and remnant radiation. Define attenuation.
