- Plants meet all of the criteria for being considered living things. They are made up of cells, they take in nutrients from their environment and use them to create energy and build new cells, they grow and develop over time, they reproduce, they respond to stimuli, they maintain homeostasis, and they evolve over time.

Plants are one of the two major groups of living organisms that are an essential entity to the function of the biosphere. Plants can be found in all known parts of the earth, in all shapes and sizes.

- Order. Organisms are highly organized, coordinated structures that consist of one or more cells. Even very simple, single-celled organisms are remarkably complex: inside each cell, atoms make up molecules; these in turn make up cell organelles and other cellular inclusions.
- Sensitivity or Response to Stimuli. Organisms respond to diverse stimuli. For example, plants can bend toward a source of light, climb on fences and walls, or respond to touch (Figure 2).
- Reproduction. Single-celled organisms reproduce by first duplicating their DNA, and then dividing it equally as the cell prepares to divide to form two new cells.
- Growth and Development. All living things increase in size and/or change over their lifespan. For example, a human grows from a baby into an adult and goes through developmental processes such as puberty.
Key idea: Plants are a definite and important category of living thing. They can have a variety of forms. You will need: • a set of cards with examples of plants and non-plants (e.g. a tree, a fire, a carrot, a lion, etc). Look at the cards showing a range of objects.

All living organisms share several key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to the environment, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, homeostasis, energy processing, and evolution. When viewed together, these characteristics serve to define life.
May 5, 2020 · If Robinson et al want to continue their claim that 85% of Earth biomass (plants) is made up of organic semi‐living machines and that intelligence is a gift belonging only to 0.3% of life (animals), they are obviously free to believe it, but they should support their claims with scientific evidence.

May 18, 2024 · Botany is the scientific study of plants and plant-like organisms. It helps us understand why plants are so vitally important to the world. Plants start the majority of food and energy chains, they provide us with oxygen, food and medicine. Plants can be divided into two groups: plants\(_1\) and plants\(_2\).

‘What is a plant?’ is concerned with the biological classifications of plants and the ‘tree of life’ (or phylogeny) that shows how all living organisms are related to each other. The origin of plants and the oldest extant plants — the glaucophytes — are discussed.
