- What Is Forgiveness? The ability to forgive is a moral virtue akin to justice, patience, and kindness. There are varying degrees of perfection in understanding and expressing each virtue.
- One Does Not Have to Be Perfect. One need not reach perfection in any of the moral virtues to have exercised that virtue. In the case of forgiveness, if the forgiver shows restraint in seeking revenge and is respectful without feeling loving or having the will to love, this still is exercising the virtue.
- Exercising Forgiveness Imperfectly Toward the Deceased. We now can see that it is reasonable to offer forgiveness in its imperfect form. If one forgives the deceased, there can be a willingness to abandon resentment and to be at least respectful toward the one who has died.

- Humorous Last Words. Charles Gussman, television scriptwriter: “And now a word from our sponsor.” Groucho Marx, entertainer: “Die my dear? Why that is the last thing I’d do.”
- Entertainers' Last Words. George Harrison, singer: “Love one another.” Joan Crawford, movie actress: “Damn it. Don’t you dare ask God to help me.” Ingrid Bergman, actress: “Do I look all right?
- Last Words of Atheists. Joseph Coveney, American Atheist: “I die as I live. I disbelieve in God, the bible, and the Christian religion.” Karel Soucek, Canadian stuntman: “There is no Heaven or Hell; there is no God.
- Last Words Suggestive of a God and an Afterlife. Thomas Alva Edison, inventor: “It is very beautiful over there.” William Allingham, Irish poet: “I see such things as you cannot imagine.”
We all need to feel loved. Thank the person. Thank him or her for allowing you to be there, for past things, etc. Offer forgiveness. If there were situations when the dying person has hurt you in some way, offer them forgiveness if it feels right to you. Tell the person they are forgiven if you feel that way.

Lewis I sat at his bedside listening as my patient shared stories of his life, family, and friends. The New Testament apostle Paul addressed the church at Colosse on how to live a Christian life. He tells them to “Be gentle and forbearing with one another and, if one has a difference (a grievance or complaint) against another, readily pardoning each other; even as the Lord has [freely] forgiven you, so must you also [forgive]” Colossians 3:13. You may question why you would need to forgive someone after they have died. Death does not cancel the command to forgive. I learned this firsthand several years ago as God was preparing me for ministry. Following my Morning Prayer, I sat down to write the names of several individuals who were coming to mind. Not knowing why I was writing the names...
