Aug 16, 2024 · While scripture does not command Christians to attend church, it does speak powerfully about the blessing of the church community. James exhorts anyone who is sick to “call the elders of the church to pray over them,” and to “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other” (James 5:14-16).
Jan 4, 2022 · Simply put, the Bible tells us we need to attend church so we can worship God with other believers and be taught His Word for our spiritual growth. The early church “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42).
- Finding a Sense of Community and Belonging. One of the leading reasons people go to church is to find a sense of community. Many people move to new cities, states or countries and will find a place of worship to meet their neighbors.
- Opportunities for Spiritual Growth and Development. Growing spiritually is possible outside of church, yet this growth is one of the main reasons to go to church.
- Experiencing the Power of Worship and Prayer. Worship can help people through all stages of life. Everyone sitting in church chairs or pews is going through something unique.
- Opportunities to Serve and Give Back. Going to church gives you an opportunity to serve and give back to the community. In fact, this is one of the primary reasons to go to church.
- Jesus Christ died for the church. Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
- We must be imitators of Christ and His apostles. Luke 4:16 “He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom.
- You learn and better understand Scripture. It increases your growth on your walk of faith. Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
- There is more guidance. Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 24:6 “for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.”

- To Hear the Preaching of the Word. If the word of God is quick, powerful, and sharper than a sword (Hebrews 4:12), then hearing the preaching of Scripture is vital to your spiritual well-being.
- To Participate in Corporate Worship. Worshiping God alone is wonderful, but nothing can replace the beauty of coming together corporately to worship Him with others who also have His Spirit in them through the redeeming work of salvation.
- Because Iron Sharpens Iron. That is what Proverbs 27:17 tells us. Meeting regularly with other believers is a source of encouragement and strength. But know this: when iron rubs against iron, not only does it become sharper, it also causes sparks!
- To Exercise Your Gift. From preaching to encouraging, hospitality to administration, God equips His children with gifts to serve Christ. (See 1 Corinthians 12 and Romans 12:6).
