The Bible is clear that being self-centered or only thinking of oneself is a sin. When we think only of ourselves, we tend to forget the needs of others. Being self-seeking (Romans 2:8) and having only selfish ambition (James 3:16) makes it very difficult to please God (Romans 8:8).
Paul is calling for thinking and personal evaluation based on the authority of God’s revelation and on the facts of God and His grace. It means we are to look at ourselves through the lenses of Scripture.

Putting others first is the mark of a mature Christian. Being self-centered is part of the flesh nature we were born with, and the battle to overcome its sinful patterns continues after salvation. Our culture does us no favors because it promotes putting ourselves first and demanding our rights.
