Oct 31, 2024 · Jesus told us to “store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:20). He linked this command to the desire of our hearts: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21; see also verses 10–20).
Jesus says “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth”. This was not teaching us to give all, or even most of our stuff away. This is about the source we seek for real spiritual happiness that lasts forever, as opposed to earthly ones that are temporary.
- We Need a New Heart. To desire the things of heaven, we need a transformed heart that values Jesus more than an abundance of wealth and possessions. The heart is deceitful above all things (Jeremiah 17:9).
- Help the Poor and Those in Need. Like the early church that sold their possessions and distributed to those in need (Acts 2:45), we can look to the needs of others around us.
- Take Risks That Will Honor God.
- Live a Simple Life. Choose to live simply and not try to attain the life that others around us might be living. The allure of “making it” in life keeps our eyes focused on earthly treasures and pursuits.
It is infinitely more prudent, Jesus teaches, to store up for yourselves treasures in heaven (v 20). Heaven is a place where a treasure's value is never lost. Treasures that are stored up there have neither moth nor rust to ruin them (v 20).
Therefore in Matthew 6:19-21 Jesus encourages us to lay up treasure in heaven and not on Earth. Jesus is saying that we must be heavenly minded; we must focus on eternal issues and not just the temporary things of life.
